Tucked into the basement of San Francisco’s Mission High School, this medical facility has become a model for school-based teen health care. The conversion of a wrestling gym and adjacent storage area into three Exam Rooms, a Training and Conference Space, Lab, Dispensary and Counseling Offices was funded by the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). The collaborative effort between the SFUSD, SF State University medical staff, Mission High School students and faculty, and the architectural team, produced a facility that has been an emotional and practical anchor for the community.
“…I was moved to tears when I saw the Health Center; inner city kids don’t usually get spaces like this.”
